The "Aventuremail" webmail service

Not happy with a mere 2GB of webmail space, then your next stop will be “Aventuremail”, who are part of “Aventurehost”; a company with servers in both the US and EU.

“Aventuremail” initially opened up a 1GB service a couple of years ago. At the time they were the only company that provided such large webmail accounts, although they were let down by the stability of their servers and software, neither of which seemed to be able to maintain the promised 1GB inbox.

The company then swapped to another web based email package that allowed a greater flexibility with the account, offering the ability to filter messages, both spam and otherwise, allowed the creation of aliases, and also allowed the creation of unlimited directories and folders for message. This, at the time, alongside a stable server provided, in my opinion, a great service that was only tarred by the occasional server crash.

Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, the company then decided to further upgrade the webspace to 5GB for the inbox, and change the software one last time. This time it appeared that the software had been severely downgraded, limiting any alias accounts, and removing the option for filtering of messages or even providing a basic spam filter.

This has severely limited the usage of the webmail service, and has effectively made the 5GB of message space redundant especially since they now seem to be targeted by the spammers.

Therefore as a large storage webmail service it is next to useless (even though I still continue to use the service; I did after all pay my activation fee!), since you generally have to scour through the spam for any relevant message (have a large scythe ready!).

However, as mentioned in my “Google Mail” review, there are people out there who are developing software to make full usage of webmail services with such large mailboxes, effectively turning them into large folders for online storage. Although many are targeted at “Google Mail”, there is one that is optimised for use with any POP/SMTP support (such as “Aventuremail”):
